A correlation fault does not identify a failed camshaft sensor by itself.
P0017 means Crankshaft Position - Camshaft Position Correlation (Bank 1 Sensor B). The controller finds that the monitored camshaft relationship to the crankshaft does not meet the expected correlation. It is a relationship fault, not an automatic instruction to replace the B sensor or the timing chain.
Preserve the scan and identify bank 1 and camshaft B from the exact engine information. Check safe oil basics, cam/crank signal integrity, applicable variable-timing behavior and mechanical alignment in the sequence required for that engine. Stop for oil-pressure warnings or serious timing noise.
What Does the P0017 Code Mean?
The crankshaft and camshaft signals let the controller relate piston position to valve events. If their observed relationship is inconsistent with the expected reference, the monitor can report correlation failure. The error may represent actual cam timing or misleading position information; those possibilities require different repairs.
B commonly identifies the exhaust cam in the cited Ford naming, but the actual layout must be confirmed. Bank 1, the B cam, its sensor and its oil-control component are separate identities to locate correctly. A generic diagram from a different engine can put a valid test on the wrong component.
Variable cam timing adds another distinction: commanded angle, actual reported angle and the underlying mechanical reference are not the same measurement. Oil delivery, phaser behavior, signal quality, target alignment and required learned references can affect the investigation. Do not interpret a single live-data value without its operating context.

Subaru bulletin 09-128-24, dated October 2024, addresses specified 2022–24 BRZ applications. Its correlation-code procedure includes eligible ECM software work, saved monitor data and subsequent checks as directed. It is not a blanket sensor or chain replacement bulletin.
Confirm bank 1 and cam B from the actual engine; generic letters do not replace the layout.
A correlation mismatch can concern physical timing or the signals used to represent it.
