It depends on the cause. Cleaning or re-tensioning the connector runs $0 to $15 as a DIY job. A solenoid connector pigtail runs $15 to $40. Wiring repair for a short to power runs $15 to $80 in supplies, or $120 to $350 at a shop. A new boost control solenoid runs $30 to $150 for the part and $120 to $350 installed. A PCM driver repair or replacement is the rare case at $300 to $1,200 with programming, and a turbocharger, which P0246 rarely needs, runs far more. Most cases land at the low end because the fault is a shorted wire or connector. Shop quotes climb when the coil-resistance and short-to-power tests get skipped, so ask for them before approving a solenoid or a turbo.
What causes a short to power on the boost solenoid circuit?
The boost solenoid lives in a hot, vibration-heavy part of the engine bay near the turbo, so its control wire chafes against the turbo heat shield, the head, or the intake until the insulation wears through and the copper touches a powered or grounded surface. Once the control wire contacts 12V, the PCM reads the circuit high and sets P0246. A connector that fills with oil or melts can also bridge the control pin to the feed pin internally. A shorted solenoid coil reading near zero ohms is the other common cause. Inspect the harness at every point it crosses something hot or sharp, and route the repaired wire clear of the heat shield.
What scanner do I need to diagnose P0246?
You want a scanner that shows live boost data and can run a bidirectional boost-solenoid actuation, plus a multimeter for the coil and short-to-power tests. A basic reader shows only the code.
