P0481 means Fan 2 Control Circuit. The controller commanded or monitored the circuit identified as fan 2 and found that the driver or feedback state did not meet the expected control logic. The code does not prove the engine is overheating, and it does not identify a bad fan motor without loaded circuit evidence.
Save the complete fault event before clearing it: coolant and air-conditioning pressure/command data, fan 1 and fan 2 requests, relay/module feedback, system voltage, vehicle speed and over-temperature warnings. What Does the P0481 Code Mean?
Cooling fans may use two separate motors, multiple relay speeds, series/parallel relay logic or a variable-speed module. Fan 2 is therefore a control designation, not a universal physical component.
The ECM can monitor relay-driver feedback, fan-control module status or circuit current. P0481 indicates that this control path failed its electrical monitor; actual engine temperature is an input to the command, not the electrical fault definition.
A fan can be inoperative because it was never requested, while a circuit code can exist even when the motor occasionally runs. Requested state, feedback, supply voltage and current must be viewed together.
Save coolant, A/C and fan command data. No movement is not a failure if the strategy never requested the output.
