P07A5 Code: Transmission Friction Element B Stuck On
P07A5: Prove the Release Fault
Identify the transmission before testing the actuator, control path or friction element.
DIAGNOSTIC FOCUS
- FAULT TYPE
- Assigned B friction element remains applied when release is expected
- FIRST CHECKS
- Transmission identity, full scan and valid command/response evidence
B is not a universal gear number or a synonym for pressure-control solenoid B.
P07A5 means Transmission Friction Element B Stuck On. The controller identifies behavior consistent with the assigned friction element remaining applied when release is expected. This functional finding does not, by itself, prove a welded clutch, failed motor or electrical short.
Identify the installed transmission and the actual B element before testing. Separate the requested state, actuator response and evidence of release. Hydraulic and electromechanical designs require different procedures. Stop for binding, unexpected movement, severe engagement shock or loss of drive instead of forcing another shift.
What Does the P07A5 Code Mean?
A friction element controls torque transfer within the transmission. Its B designation belongs to the specific component map. Do not translate the letter into second gear, a universal clutch pack, a named shift solenoid or a pressure-control solenoid without the correct application information.
Stuck on is a functional category. A displayed release command does not prove release occurred, while an electrical command or motor sound does not show the condition of every mechanical part. Validate the feedback used to judge the response before choosing a repair.
Architecture determines the tests: hydraulic apply/release paths differ from electric actuators and mechanical linkages. Check only fitted components. This guide describes required evidence, not a universal teardown or active-test procedure.
Use exact transmission and application information.
Command, actuator movement and release are different evidence.
Use the fitted mechanical, electric or hydraulic arrangement.
P07A5 Symptoms, Severity, and Driving Safety
Record the exact warning and module.
Stop operation and arrange appropriate transport.
Do not attempt repeated forced engagements.
The affected gear depends on the actual element map.
Stop rather than testing under additional load.
Record installed parts and completed setup.
Prompt transmission diagnosis; binding, unexpected movement or unsafe engagement requires stopping operation
P07A5 Causes and the Evidence That Separates Them
These are conditional diagnostic branches, not ranked causes. Establish which actuation system is fitted before using them. A hydraulic branch is irrelevant to a design that has no hydraulic clutch-control circuit.
Friction element or release mechanism binds
The assigned mechanism may not release despite a valid request.
How to prove it: Confirm the command and component mapping before mechanical inspection. Binding or internal damage is a possibility, not a verdict from the code. Internal work requires the current removal, support and inspection procedure. Do not force linkage to create movement.
Prove mechanical releaseFitted actuator does not achieve the required movement
An electromechanical control path may fail to deliver the expected response.
How to prove it: Compare supported request and position information with safely verified actuator behavior. Distinguish electrical support from linkage or clutch resistance. A motor noise alone cannot identify which part failed or establish complete release. Never energize unidentified terminals.
Check actual actuationHydraulic apply or release path remains incorrect
This branch applies only where the transmission uses hydraulic control for the element.
How to prove it: Use specified pressure and release-path tests before condemning a valve or control body. Confirm fluid specification and condition where relevant. Do not infer pressure from a scan command or transfer this branch to an electromechanical dry-clutch system.
Use hydraulic tests only if fittedElectrical supply, connection or control defect
A proven electrical fault may interfere with the fitted actuator or controller.
How to prove it: Use the recorded electrical companion code and actual wiring diagram. Test relevant feed, return and control paths with approved protection and isolation. P07A5 itself does not define an electrical-high fault, so do not assume a short to power.
Verify electrical supportIncorrect response feedback or interpretation
The information used to infer engagement may be unreliable.
How to prove it: Validate available shaft-speed, actuator-position or pressure information according to the fitted design. Not every system exposes every parameter. A missing PID or unexpected value is not automatically a failed sensor or controller; prove the relevant input and context.
Validate response informationWrong part, installation or required setup after work
A recent repair may leave an incompatible component or incomplete setup.
How to prove it: Check the exact part, installation and current service requirements. Perform calibration or adaptation only when applicable and after physical and electrical support are established. A routine is not a substitute for repairing a demonstrated binding or control defect.
Review recent parts and setupKeep stuck-on separate from stuck-off and electrical faults. Interpret each companion through its own monitor and the correct transmission.
Using MA200 Plus During P07A5 Diagnosis
The iCARZONE MA200 Plus preserves supported transmission records, event data and available live information. Capture the original functional code and relevant electrical, temperature or speed companions before clearing records.
Verify transmission and parameter coverage. Confirm access to the exact module and relevant request or response data. A generic gear indication may not show the assigned B element, actuator position or actual release state.
The scanner does not directly measure hydraulic pressure, motor current, resistance or mechanical release. Physical tests require external equipment and OEM procedures; controller-reported values are not independent measurements.

Preserve the release-fault record and compare supported commands with valid feedback before choosing a repair.
Active tests and service functions vary by vehicle and software support. Do not assume a guaranteed clutch relearn, actuator command or controller programming function. Follow required movement precautions; a supported routine cannot automatically repair a stuck friction element.
How to Diagnose P07A5 in 6 Steps
Use this six-stage evidence path with current service information. Component assignments, monitor logic, acceptable movement and required setup vary. No universal pressure, resistance, slip-speed limit or adaptation sequence is supplied.
P07A5 Quick Diagnostic Path
-
1
Preserve the complete functional event
- Save P07A5, any OEM subtype, reporting module and current or pending status. Record available event data, the driving condition, warnings and recent transmission work. Preserve companion faults before any reset.
- Stop first if movement or engagement is unsafe. Do not repeatedly shift, increase throttle or perform a stall test to create more data. The symptom history is useful evidence without deliberately recreating a hazardous event.
-
2
Identify the transmission and assigned B element
- Use VIN, transmission identification and current component or application information. Separate the friction element from its actuator, shift mechanism and any similarly named solenoid.
- Determine whether the control is electromechanical, hydraulic or another fitted arrangement. Do not use an internet letter-to-gear shortcut. The correct architecture determines which measurements, component tests and safety precautions are relevant.
-
3
Check electrical support and actual companion faults
- Inspect safely accessible connectors, harness routing and recent-work areas. Establish relevant supply and return integrity and investigate recorded speed, position, control or temperature companions through their own procedures.
- Check fluid only as applicable to the fitted design and prescribed conditions. Do not add a generic fluid or flush a transmission merely because this code is present. Avoid opening hot or pressurized systems and preserve required isolation.
-
4
Compare a valid request with valid response evidence
- Use supported data to understand requested state and available feedback. Establish that the parameters actually describe the target component and that the input data used by the monitor is credible.
- Keep command, actuator movement and torque-release behavior separate. Do not infer release from a motor click, one position value or an accepted command. Current OEM tests determine how the actual response can be established safely.
-
5
Prove the mechanical or control-path defect
- Use the specified tests for the fitted actuation system. Electromechanical checks follow the appropriate motor, linkage and release mechanism; hydraulic checks follow actual pressure, valve and release paths where fitted.
- Never force an actuator, apply battery power to unidentified terminals or bypass movement interlocks. Resistance tests require the prescribed isolated state. Where safe external evidence cannot establish release, leave internal diagnosis to qualified transmission service.
-
6
Repair the demonstrated fault and verify the original function
- Correct only the proven mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, feedback or installation issue. Complete applicable supported setup after the repair and restore every disturbed connection or component correctly.
- Verify release and the associated monitor under approved safe conditions, then compare current and pending records with the original event. A cleared warning or completed adaptation alone is insufficient. Do not return the vehicle to service while binding or unexpected movement remains.
How to Fix P07A5 and Verify the Repair
Repair a demonstrated release-mechanism defect
Use the correct mechanical inspection and installation procedure.
Restore the proven actuation or electrical path
Identify the exact failed connection or component.
Correct verified hydraulic or feedback faults
Apply only the branch fitted to the transmission.
Complete applicable setup and validate release
Confirm function and monitor results separately.
Architecture-specific diagnosis
VIN-specific quoteAsk which tests separate command, feedback and release.
Accessible electrical or actuator repair
VIN-specific quoteSeparate the actual component and access requirements.
Hydraulic or internal mechanical work
VIN-specific quoteRequire measured evidence before major disassembly.
Setup and final verification
VIN-specific quoteInclude only applicable routines and safe function checks.
Request a VIN-specific quote backed by measurements. Harness, actuator and internal repairs have different costs. This code alone does not justify replacing the complete transmission or establish a fixed price.
For recurrence, compare the original response evidence. Recheck parts, installation and companions before repeating adaptations or replacing a controller. A temporary shift improvement is not complete verification.
P07A5 OEM Differences and DIY Limits
Ford's 2015 OBD summary describes DPS6 as an electromechanically actuated dry-clutch design. It lists B-clutch functional stuck-on separately from actuator open, short and position-feedback faults. This illustrates why the functional code does not automatically identify an electrical defect.
Do not substitute a similarly named solenoid.
Electromechanical dry-clutch control differs from hydraulics.
Investigate each recorded monitor separately.
That DPS6 example has splash lubrication rather than a hydraulic clutch-control pump and pressure-control solenoids. Do not apply a generic valve-body or flush diagnosis to it. This is one named architecture; other transmissions using P07A5 still require their own component map and procedure.
- Save exact fault wording and symptoms.
- Record recent parts, repairs and service routines.
- Identify the transmission before buying components.
- Arrange transport if movement or engagement is unsafe.
- Do not repeatedly force gear engagement.
- Do not power unknown actuator terminals.
- Do not bypass movement restraints or interlocks.
- Do not assume fluid, flush or relearn repairs every case.
