How much does it cost to fix P2111?
It depends on the cause. A throttle body cleaning is about $10 in cleaner as a DIY job, or $80 to $180 at a shop. Cleaning or re-tensioning the TAC connector runs $0 to $20 DIY. A throttle position sensor, where it is a separate part, runs $20 to $120. A complete electronic throttle body runs $120 to $450 for the part and $250 to $700 installed, more on some European cars. Most P2111 cases land at the low end because carbon or a connector is the real cause. Shop quotes climb when the throttle-body cleaning and relearn get skipped, so ask whether the bore was cleaned and the throttle relearned before approving a new throttle body.
Do I need to relearn the throttle after fixing P2111?
Yes, on almost every drive-by-wire car. After cleaning the bore or replacing the throttle body, the ECM still holds the old idea of where the closed and wide-open stops are. A throttle relearn, also called idle relearn or throttle adaptation, teaches it the new positions. Skip it and you can get a high or hanging idle, a stall, or P2111 right back. Some cars relearn with a key-on sequence, but many GM, VW, and BMW platforms need a scan tool to run the adaptation.
