AdBlue (SCR/DEF)
- Function Purpose: AdBlue is a crucial component in the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system of diesel - powered vehicles. Its main function is to reduce harmful nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from the vehicle's exhaust. NOx emissions are a major contributor to air pollution and can have negative impacts on human health and the environment. AdBlue is a urea - based solution that, when injected into the exhaust stream, decomposes into ammonia and carbon dioxide. The ammonia then reacts with the NOx in the presence of a catalyst in the SCR system, converting the NOx into harmless nitrogen and water vapor.
- Working Principle: The AdBlue is stored in a separate tank in the vehicle. A dosing unit, controlled by the vehicle's engine control unit (ECU), injects a precise amount of AdBlue into the exhaust stream upstream of the SCR catalyst. The amount of AdBlue injected is based on various factors such as the engine load, speed, and the measured NOx levels in the exhaust. The ECU receives data from sensors in the exhaust system, including the NOx sensor, which measures the concentration of NOx in the exhaust gases. Based on this data, the ECU calculates the appropriate amount of AdBlue to be injected to ensure efficient reduction of NOx emissions.
- Benefits:
- Emissions Reduction: AdBlue plays a vital role in significantly reducing NOx emissions from diesel vehicles. By enabling the SCR system to work effectively, it helps vehicles meet strict environmental regulations regarding emissions.
- Environmental Protection: Lower NOx emissions mean cleaner air, which is beneficial for both the environment and public health. It helps to mitigate the formation of smog, acid rain, and other pollution - related problems caused by NOx emissions.
- Engine Performance: In some cases, the use of AdBlue and the proper functioning of the SCR system can also have a positive impact on engine performance. By reducing the amount of NOx in the exhaust, it can prevent the engine from going into a derated state, which may occur if the emissions levels are too high. This ensures that the engine can operate at its optimal power and efficiency levels.
